About Us
Hello from the rows,
We're a mother-daughter team based in Lacombe County, Central Alberta. We've been growing things together for as long as either of us can remember. What started as shared weekends in the garden eventually grew into something with a name: Black Earth Blossoms.
We grow cut flowers. We grow them here, in Zone 3, in soil we know, through a season that is short and completely our own.
Why we do it this way
The cut flower industry runs largely on imports. Flowers grown overseas, treated for long-haul transport, and chilled for days or weeks before they reach a vase. They look fine. They just don't last particularly well, and they didn't come from anywhere near you.
We believe in grown, not flown. Every stem we sell was in the ground here in Alberta, cut at dawn when the plant is at its peak, and in your hands within hours or days. We work without harsh chemicals because we're tending land we care about and because flowers that come into your home should be grown with that in mind.
What we grow
Our varieties are chosen for what actually thrives in a Zone 3 season.
Peonies open our season in late June, fleeting and worth the wait. Dahlias carry us from August through first frost in a range of colours and forms. Zinnias and snapdragons bridge the gap and bloom reliably through summer. Sweet peas, cosmos, strawflower, and yarrow fill out bouquets with texture and that loose quality that imported flowers never quite manage.
We dig the dahlias every fall, overwinter them, and start again the next year. It is not a passive operation.
What this means for you
A short season forces honesty. We can't offer everything year-round, so we don't pretend to. What we can offer is flowers at their actual peak, cut the morning of market, arranged by hand, and ready to go. When something is gone for the season, it's gone. When something is at its best, we'll say so.
We're grateful for everyone who finds their way here, whether you're a regular at the Saturday market, planning your own wedding flowers, or just wanted something for the kitchen table. Your support keeps us planting.
Follow along on Instagram and Facebook for regular updates from the field, or subscribe to our email list for notes on what's blooming and when pre-orders open.
Warmly,
Denise & Megan
